Chicago Misses Chance to Host 2028 DNC
The Democratic National Convention will not be held in Chicago in 2028, ending hopes for a repeat event at the United Center, similar to those during the era of the Michael Jordan-era Bulls. This decision marks a setback for Governor JB Pritzker, who was advocating for the city. The Democratic National Committee announced early Thursday that the potential host cities have been narrowed down. The finalists are Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia, which hosted the convention in earlier years. Atlanta and Chicago, though initially considered, are no longer in the running.
Chicago’s exclusion came shortly after a decision that Illinois would not host early Democratic primaries in 2028. Governor Pritzker and the Illinois Democratic Party had campaigned for an early primary, highlighting the state’s diverse demographics. These moves could have benefited Pritzker if he decided to run for a future presidential nomination.
Pritzker was a significant financial supporter of the 2024 convention, contributing $5.6 million. This donation accounted for approximately 6% of the total $97 million raised. Pritzker has a history of supporting Democratic conventions, having contributed $1.25 million in 2016 to Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
Factors Influencing City Selection
Chicago’s consideration among the final cities may be surprising due to limited options. Few cities have the necessary union roots and accommodation capacity required for such a massive event. The Democratic National Convention leadership visited Chicago to assess its potential as a host city.
A spokesperson for the national committee did not elaborate on the reasons for the 2028 finalist selections. DNC Chair Ken Martin praised all contender cities for their strong bids. He expressed optimism about the upcoming decision, looking forward to further collaboration as the final choice is made.
Future Prospects for Chicago
Despite the current outcome, there remains a possibility for Chicago to host the convention in 2032. The local host committee has already bid for that year. Emily Soong, representing the Chicago 2028 Bid Committee, expressed pride in past conventions hosted and reiterated commitment to supporting future host cities.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson highlighted the success of the 2024 convention and reflected on the city’s capability to host world-class events. He voiced confidence in Chicago’s potential for the 2032 convention.
Alderman Walter Burnett pointed out that the convention could have impacted local redevelopment plans. However, he was not overly concerned about Chicago missing out on the opportunity. Historically, Chicago has been a site for multiple Democratic conventions.
Historical Context
Chicago’s history with Democratic conventions spans several decades. It hosted back-to-back conventions for Franklin Roosevelt in the 1940s and welcomed Adlai Stevenson in the 1950s. The city also held conventions for Grover Cleveland and William Jennings Bryan in the 1890s. Republican conventions were held consecutively in Chicago from 1904 to 1920.
Governor Pritzker remains hopeful about Chicago’s future as a convention host. He expressed anticipation for welcoming delegates again during a news conference in May, as DNC officials concluded a visit to Chicago.
