The South Carolina Supreme Court has reversed Alex Murdaugh’s two murder convictions, effectively vacating his life sentences. This decision came after the court identified jury tampering by clerk Becky Hill. Hill allegedly influenced the jury to secure a guilty verdict in order to elevate her book sales. Despite the overturned conviction, Murdaugh will continue serving a 40-year federal sentence for separate financial crimes.
On Saturday morning, Becky Hill appeared calm outside her South Carolina home, seen sitting on a swinging bench after breakfast. Hill declined to comment on the case due to a gag order and pending litigation. She faces a civil lawsuit filed by Murdaugh over the scandal. Hill had resigned in 2024 when the jury tampering allegations emerged.
Hill, formerly the Colleton County clerk of courts, had pleaded guilty to obstruction, perjury, and misconduct charges related to Murdaugh’s trial. Her sentencing included a three-year probation term, following her actions during the murder trial. Hill expressed remorse for her actions, admitting that her efforts had been misguided. The written opinion from the state’s highest court criticized her conduct, describing it as a significant attempt to sway the jury.
The reversal of Murdaugh’s convictions by the court granted him a new trial. However, Murdaugh remains in custody. He was previously found guilty in December 2022 for the deaths of his son, Paul, and wife, Maggie, who were shot on a family property on June 7, 2021. He had placed the 911 call, reporting the shooting of his family.
In March 2023, jurors convicted Murdaugh, issuing consecutive life sentences without parole. Years of subsequent appeals eventually led to the Supreme Court’s annulment of his convictions earlier this month. Murdaugh had also been convicted separately for embezzling millions from his clients.
Murdaugh’s surviving son, Richard “Buster” Murdaugh, expressed doubt about his father’s guilt in an interview. Buster shared his belief that his father could not have been involved in harming his mother and brother, maintaining his stance throughout the ordeal.
