Many influential conservatives express concerns that artificial intelligence, particularly chatbots like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude, are being used with a bias toward left-wing media and ideologies. This perception makes it challenging for average Americans to trust AI as a neutral news source. AI systems are known for sometimes generating false information, which can quickly damage credibility.
The Media Research Center (MRC), a right-leaning group, has conducted studies to assess whether these AI chatbots can be trusted. MRC President David Bozell stated, ‘We’re watching the next phase of media bias unfold in real time,’ questioning the neutrality of AI developed in Silicon Valley.
In January, ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, denied claims about Charlie Kirk being assassinated, citing a lack of credible evidence. The same month, MRC noted that Claude, from Anthropic, rejected the direct inclusion of the U.S. First Amendment in its policies.
Recent reports highlighted that many AI chatbots often ignore controversial developments. For instance, when asked about Graham Platner, a Maine Senate candidate with a controversial online history, chatbots focused on his achievements and endorsements rather than controversies surrounding his past Reddit posts.
Critics have identified an ideological bias in AI systems, citing a Pew Research Center study which found that 57% of teenagers rely on AI chatbots, despite many adults believing the information provided is often inaccurate.
Dan Schneider, vice president of MRC’s Free Speech America, believes the reliance on left-wing media by AI chatbots is evident. He mentioned that while platforms like xAI’s Grok reveal their sources, most of the industry remains opaque.
Furthermore, media watchdogs observe connections between AI companies and political affiliations, notably with OpenAI executives having ties to the Democratic Party. In contrast, Grok, affiliated with Elon Musk, has different associations.
A separate case involves a University of Cambridge PhD student, Malia Marks, who reported how ChatGPT recommended against submitting her writing to platforms like The New York Post due to perceived career consequences. This incident added to criticisms of ChatGPT’s bias.
OpenAI and Anthropic did not provide comments regarding these concerns. Google claims that Gemini is designed to offer responses that do not favor any political ideology.
