Controversy Surrounds Sentencing of Illegal Immigrant Trucker in Fatal Crash

Officials from the Trump administration and conservatives criticized the sentencing of an illegal immigrant trucker who caused a fatal collision in California. The trucker, who killed three people, received a sentence of less than five years.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy expressed dissatisfaction, labeling the sentence a “slap on the wrist.” He stated, “We will not stop until all illegal alien truckers are put out of business and held accountable.” The Department of Homeland Security echoed this sentiment, announcing plans to arrest the trucker upon release to prevent his return to the roads.

Jashanpreet Singh, a 21-year-old Indian national, was sentenced to four years and eight months for three felony counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. The crash, which occurred in October 2025 on Interstate 10 in San Bernardino County, resulted in three deaths and multiple injuries. Video evidence showed Singh did not apply brakes before the collision.

This is a wildly insufficient punishment for a foreign national, in our country illegally, who killed 3 people with a truck,” commented Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah.

Federal sources revealed that Singh entered the U.S. via the El Centro Sector in California in March 2022. He was later released under the Biden administration pending an immigration hearing. In June 2025, Singh acquired a commercial driver’s license in California, which critics argue should not have been granted.

Transportation Secretary Duffy warned about fraud enabling illegal immigrants to obtain commercial licenses, posing safety hazards. Federal officials had requested California halt new licenses to non-citizens and assess compliance with federal rules. Reports suggested Singh should have been disqualified under an emergency policy by the Department of Transportation.

During a debate among Democratic gubernatorial candidates in California, several contenders voiced opposition to federal pressure for English proficiency testing for truck drivers. They claimed such measures could lead to racial profiling, a stance criticized by others in the political arena.

In a discussion on law enforcement practices, some officials argued against considering race in compliance checks. Xavier Beccera, former Health and Human Services Secretary, denounced racially biased language proficiency tests.

However, Sheriff Chad Bianco, a Republican candidate, argued against claims of racial profiling. He emphasized the importance of assessing legal violations without unnecessary focus on race.
