Controversy Surrounds New York Mayor’s Attendance at 9/11 Memorial

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani sparked debate with his intent to attend the 25th-anniversary 9/11 memorial, despite criticism over his past remarks and affiliations. His rhetoric about law enforcement and associations with figures linked to radical views have drawn criticism, particularly from families of 9/11 victims and political opponents.

Actor Robert De Niro addressed the controversy, acknowledging objections to Mamdani’s comments on law enforcement but arguing the mayor should attend the memorial. De Niro acknowledged flaws in Mamdani’s call to “defund the police” but viewed the memorial as a potential bridge to unity.

However, political commentator Christian Toto questioned De Niro’s understanding of the issues, citing Mamdani’s controversial associations, including his praise of figures linked to terrorism. An online petition with over 100,000 signatures from 9/11 victims’ families has urged Mamdani to avoid the event.

Critics highlight Mamdani’s past support for individuals such as Imam Siraj Wahhaj, linked to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and Hasan Piker, who made inflammatory comments about the 9/11 attacks. Rafael Mangual of the Manhattan Institute criticized Mamdani’s associations and remarks, suggesting De Niro overlooked significant concerns.

Mamdani also faced scrutiny for gift exchanges with his staff linked to controversial legal representations. His choice of chief counsel Ramzi Kassem, who represented a convicted al Qaeda member, has further intensified backlash.

Mary Marslender, a Republican consultant, and Elizabeth Pipko, a former RNC spokesperson, criticized De Niro’s defense of Mamdani. They cited Mamdani’s past statements and reluctance to distance himself from extremist rhetoric. They argued De Niro’s support exemplifies a lack of awareness of the implications of Mamdani’s actions and words.
