Controversy Surrounds Foul and Coach’s Reaction in Indiana Fever Game

Sophie Cunningham experienced a rough night during a recent game. The incident occurred when DiJonai Carrington of the Chicago Sky struck Cunningham’s head with her forearm. Surprisingly, Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White seemed to defend Carrington, which caused a stir.

During the game against the Chicago Sky, Carrington caught Cunningham on the head and neck while attempting a layup. The officials reviewed the play, upgraded the foul to a Flagrant 2, and ejected Carrington from the game.

Afterwards, Cunningham did not hold back her thoughts about the encounter. She stated, “Clearly, I think it was unnecessary. I’ve never spoken to her and have no issues, but it felt intentional.”

Despite Cunningham’s feelings, Coach White shared a different perspective. “It was a hard foul, but I don’t believe DiJonai intended to target her neck,” White explained, acknowledging the foul while maintaining her stance on Carrington’s intentions.

White’s comments appear to stem from her familiarity with Carrington, having coached her in Connecticut for two seasons. However, this incident involves Cunningham, who is part of White’s team now.

The situation escalated when Carrington posted “White Privilege” on Threads after the game, tagging the Indiana Fever but not clarifying her message. Cunningham dismissed the racial implications, saying, “This isn’t about race. Last year, I did the same and got ejected, rightly so.”

Coach White chose not to comment on Carrington’s social media statement. While a coach need not condemn every opposing player’s actions, additional support for Cunningham might have been beneficial.
