Arizona Cardinals’ Week 1 Upset and Dan Orlovsky’s Quarterback Debate

Week 1 of the NFL season witnessed a significant upset with the Arizona Cardinals securing a surprise victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, a team heavily favored to win. This unexpected result resonated with NFL fans and analysts alike.

Former NFL quarterback-turned-analyst Dan Orlovsky faced scrutiny for his opinions on quarterbacks, particularly Justin Herbert, during his appearance on ESPN 2’s “Unsportsmanlike” with Evan Cohen, Chris Canty, and Michelle Smallmon. Cohen questioned Orlovsky’s preference for Herbert over other quarterbacks like Jalen Hurts, who achieved a Super Bowl victory a few seasons ago.

Hurts led his team to a narrow 24-22 victory over the Washington Commanders, completing 14 of 25 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns, while also contributing a rushing touchdown. Orlovsky admitted that his prior evaluations of Hurts were based on his college performances, but he has since acknowledged Hurts’ growth and achievements in the NFL.

Orlovsky explained his admiration for Herbert, stating, “I think why you’re a fan of Herbert is because that’s what it should look like. Your brain tells you that’s what it should look like.” Despite Herbert’s underwhelming performance in Week 1, Orlovsky expressed his continued support for both quarterbacks.

In a previous appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Orlovsky highlighted his optimism for Herbert, predicting a top-five MVP conversation placement by Thanksgiving and endorsing the Chargers as a strong “offensive unit” in the AFC West. In Week 1, Herbert completed 17 of 27 passes for 209 yards, including a touchdown and an interception, resulting in a 26-14 loss to the Cardinals.

The Cardinals, led by Jacoby Brissett, who threw for 277 yards and a touchdown, amassed 393 yards of total offense. The coming weeks will determine if Herbert can lead the Chargers to a successful playoff run, as he has yet to secure a postseason victory, currently holding a 0-3 record.

The Chargers will aim to recover from their initial setback when they host the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, September 20, at 4:05 p.m. ET.
