Contentious Brooklyn Democratic Party Rule Changes

New York City’s Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, is voicing strong opposition to last-minute efforts to amend Brooklyn Democratic Party rules. He argues these proposed changes would undermine the will of voters, particularly after reform-minded candidates saw success in the June primary elections.

“I very much oppose these proposed changes by the current Brooklyn Democratic Party chair,” Mamdani stated. “These actions attempt to bypass the voters’ intent.”

Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, the Brooklyn Democratic Party chair, has put forward proposals that would add over 24 voting members to the party’s executive committee. This committee is tasked with selecting the party chair coming fall. Notably, reform candidates secured 22 district leader positions in June, as reported by the City Reporter.

The newly elected district leaders won’t assume roles until fall. Current district leaders, including Bichotte Hermelyn’s supporters, still hold a majority and are readying to vote on these proposed changes soon.

Bichotte Hermelyn describes the initiative as a means to expand participation within the party. “We aim to create an inclusive environment,” she told NY1. In a video released by the Brooklyn Democratic organization, she emphasized the need to “expand leadership” and “expand representation.”

The reform camp backs longstanding Sunset Park district leader Julio Peña to become the next party chair. If Bichotte Hermelyn’s proposals are approved, extra voting members could influence the fall leadership election.

Mamdani stresses that the Brooklyn Democratic Party should reflect New Yorkers’ desires rather than engage in politics that leaves citizens “disengaged and disaffected.”

Moreover, New York Attorney General Letitia James and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams have publicly urged against proceeding with the changes.

“New Yorkers deserve leaders focused on serving communities, not on altering rules for personal gain,” James and Williams declared in a statement shared with City and State New York. “Redefining the executive committee’s structure on the eve of leadership elections contradicts our Democratic values.”

Another significant proposal gives former party chairs a vote in future leadership elections, even if they are not current district leaders. The City Reporter notes this could enable former party chair Clarence Norman, who resigned in 2005 following corruption convictions, to vote on future leadership matters.

Post-leadership election, an additional change would allow for appointing extra voting members from each Assembly district, potentially expanding the executive committee to roughly 90 members.
