Fundraising events come in various forms, with some creating significant community impact. The Sojourner Truth House in Gary hosted its annual walk titled “Walk for Stability. Walk for Community. Walk for Hope.” This event took place on Saturday, June 13, 2026, and involved a short walk around Gary.

Angela Paul, the executive director, and Pam King, director of client services, welcomed the participants. According to Airiel Crenshaw, the volunteer coordinator, the event uses peer-to-peer fundraising both online and in-person to raise essential funds. The walk celebrated its 29th anniversary this year.

Sojourner Truth House operates as a day center offering resources for at-risk women and their children. Airiel Crenshaw explained that the walk aimed to raise awareness and support for those transitioning from crisis to stability. Participants’ contributions helped provide vital resources like housing support, food access, case management, and healing programs.

This year, more than 200 people participated in the walk, traversing the area around the center. Mary Turner, a Gary resident, expressed her continued support, highlighting the center’s importance to residents.

Founded in 1997 by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, Sojourner Truth House serves as a refuge providing hospitality, recovery, advocacy, and housing to the community. During the event, the Dedicated Strong Women of Embassies of Christ set up an information table. Sherrie Greer from the group expressed appreciation for participating and recognized the house’s role in the community.

“I’m very happy to see this turnout,” said Sister Kathleen Quinn, 92, addressing the crowd.

The walk included diverse participants from community members to local organizations. The established 1.1-mile route began and ended at Sojourner Truth House, featuring cheering stations to encourage walkers. A celebration marked the conclusion, with refreshments, music, community engagement, vendor connections, and activities for children.

The walk embodies a powerful message of community unity and support, helping restructure lives through hope and stability. Proceeds aid the facility’s programs, emphasizing a compassionate community aiding individuals and families.
