A recent gathering on Chicago’s South Side demonstrated a significant effort to tackle violence and enhance community safety, led by Pastor Corey B. Brooks. The event, organized by Project H.O.O.D., aimed to establish a ‘100% violence-free zone’ around the Robert R. McCormick Leadership & Economic Opportunity Center at 6620 S. King Drive.
Pastor Brooks stated, “This is bigger than a building. This is about creating a culture where men stand together to protect families, mentor young people, reduce violence, and build something that will outlive us.” He emphasized the community’s right to peace, opportunity, and hope.
The ‘1000 Men Unity Gathering’ attracted approximately 750 men, including pastors, fathers, mentors, activists, business leaders, former gang members, and residents from across Chicago. They gathered to promote safety, accountability, and opportunity.
“We declared that this is going to be a peace zone, a nonviolent zone, a violence-free zone,” Brooks said, highlighting the community’s commitment to making the neighborhood safe for families and children.
The Robert R. McCormick Center aims to alleviate violence and poverty through initiatives involving workforce development, mentorship, education, entrepreneurship, job training, and community engagement. Attendees of the gathering received a preview of the center and learned about its plans to benefit future generations.
The surrounding area, previously labeled one of Chicago’s most dangerous, has seen improvements due to ongoing community investment and outreach. Project H.O.O.D., founded by Brooks, focuses on reducing violence and poverty through mentorship, faith, and economic development efforts.
Brooks expressed hope that initiatives like this could serve as a model for urban areas nationwide. “I think this center is going to be an example of what we can do across America in urban areas,” he said. “If we don’t wait on government and take responsibility for ourselves, we can change the trajectory of these neighborhoods and urban centers.”
