The California gubernatorial debate witnessed intense exchanges between candidates, drawing strong reactions from the audience. Republican contender Chad Bianco and Democratic opponent Katie Porter clashed over the state’s sanctuary policies regarding illegal immigrants.
This pivotal discussion took place during a debate hosted by NBC LA and Telemundo 52, ahead of the California jungle primary on June 2, 2026. The interaction between Porter and Bianco turned heated when the moderator inquired about Porter’s stance on these policies. Porter expressed her view that existing laws need enforcement to prevent unauthorized actions by individuals.
Bianco interjected with a provocative remark, suggesting Porter needed lessons on motherhood. The audience reacted audibly to this exchange. Porter retorted, dismissing Bianco’s insinuation.
The campaigns of both candidates have been embroiled in controversy. Reports surfaced about Porter using strong language towards a staffer and details from her divorce have been scrutinized. Despite the allegations of verbal and physical abuse by her ex-husband, Porter shares custody of their three children. Her ex-boyfriend, Julian Willis, threatened to involve Child Protective Services, yet Porter maintains custody.
Conversely, Bianco, currently the sheriff of Riverside County, has faced questions about his past connection with the Oath Keepers, a far-right organization. Bianco has claimed that his involvement ended in 2014.
Both candidates have drawn media attention concerning their past actions and affiliations as they vie for leadership of California.
