Trump Administration’s Attempt to Remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook

The Trump administration is pursuing efforts to dismiss Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, two months following a Supreme Court decision allowing her to keep her job amidst legal disputes. The Supreme Court, in a 5-4 ruling, decided that Cook, appointed by President Joe Biden, could remain during her legal challenge against her termination.

Chief Justice John Roberts noted President Trump’s potential to reattempt Cook’s dismissal, given she receives proper notification and a chance to contest. Trump has expressed his intention to proceed accordingly.

In a recent correspondence, White House aide Dan Scavino informed Cook of Trump’s consideration to remove her, complying with the Supreme Court’s directive for sufficient notice, granting her until August 26 to respond.

This dismissal effort stems from allegations of mortgage fraud filed last August by Bill Pulte, the head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Pulte accused Cook of listing two properties—one in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and another in Atlanta—as primary residences. This designation can lead to better mortgage rates for homebuyers.

Cook disputes the allegations, claiming political motives behind her removal attempt and maintaining her decisions on interest rates are for the public interest. Her attorney, Abbe Lowell, defended that Cook rightfully described the Ann Arbor property as her primary home, given her long-term residence since 2005. An isolated incidental reference to the Atlanta condo as a primary residence was not intended to deceive.

Additional documents showed Cook listing the Atlanta condo as a vacation home or second home during her confirmation process. The recent White House letter reiterates allegations from a year ago amid Cook’s legal defense against political interference in the Federal Reserve’s independence.

Lowell asserts, “The allegations remain baseless. Despite President Trump’s actions, the facts and Supreme Court precedent safeguard Governor Cook’s position and the Federal Reserve’s historic role.”
