California’s Election Controversy
After the prolonged vote count from the June 2 primary, attention turned to Shasta County, California. The county recently approved a measure, known as Measure B, which severely restricts mail-in voting and mandates government-issued photo identification for voters. This development sparked conflict over election integrity.
Legal Battle Over Measure B
California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Secretary of State Shirley Weber have sued Shasta County, arguing that Measure B contradicts state election laws. The lawsuit seeks to overturn Measure B before the November election. Bonta stated, “Measure B is legally indefensible,” pointing out its inconsistency with state laws.
“No city or county gets to unilaterally rewrite our election rules,” Bonta emphasized.
Measure B aims to eliminate most mail-in voting, allowing only the infirm, military personnel, and U.S. citizens overseas to use the system. It also proposes in-person voting on a single day and a separate county registration system.
Previous Skepticism and Changes
In 2023, election fraud allegations led Shasta County to abandon Dominion voting machines, opting for hand-counting ballots. This action prompted new state legislation prohibiting such practices. Clint Curtis, recently dismissed as Shasta County’s registrar, supported Measure B but faced backlash for removing ballot drop boxes and unsubstantiated claims against predecessors.
Curtis’s actions led to changes with Joanna Francescut set to replace him as registrar. Measure B supporters, like Richard Gallardo, expected legal challenges, stating local reforms were necessary despite potential lawsuits.
Time-sensitive Legal Decisions
The state had similar success against Huntington Beach’s voter ID law proposal, which was struck down. In Shasta County’s case, uniform election rules across California must be maintained. The lawsuit urges swift action as voters are set to receive election guides and ballots shortly.
