French Activists Accuse Israel of Abuse After Flotilla Detention

3 weeks ago 0

French activists involved in a pro-Palestinian flotilla have reported abuse while in Israeli custody. The flotilla was trying to reach the Gaza Strip and was detained by Israeli forces. Israeli authorities have denied these accusations.

French prosecutors announced on Friday the launch of a preliminary investigation into the claims made by the detained activists. The inquiry will explore allegations of torture and war crimes. The investigations are led by France’s antiterrorism office.

The flotilla’s detention has gained international attention, partly due to a video posted by an Israeli government minister. The minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, is seen taunting the activists while they were restrained on the ship’s deck.

The incident comes amid growing diplomatic pressure on Israel, particularly from European allies. This tension has intensified following Israel’s military operations in Gaza post the Hamas-led attack in 2023.

Activists have consistently attempted to breach Israel’s naval blockade on Gaza to provide aid. Efforts have increased after tightened restrictions during the ongoing conflict. The recent interception involved the group of French activists now under investigation.

The video by Ben-Gvir has triggered widespread condemnation both internationally and within Israel. The activists were eventually released and deported to Turkey following their detention.
