A burger stand in Blackpool, England, is gaining attention for keeping its signature burger priced at just over $1 for nearly 20 years. Higgitt’s Las Vegas Arcade Blackpool & £1 Burger Bar offers a burger with a bun, English beef patty, onions, and sauce. This has been sold for £1, approximately $1.34, since the business opened in 2006.
Owner Chris Higgitt shares that the consistent low price is a key factor in drawing crowds. Customers often line up for over an hour during peak tourist seasons. ‘I am very proud of being able to keep the price for this long,’ Higgitt mentioned. He transitioned from a role as a processing and quality engineer to manage a bed-and-breakfast, before opening the arcade and burger bar in 2006 with his wife, Karen.
The idea for the burger bar started as a casual conversation. Higgitt calculated he could offer the burgers for £1, an idea that evolved into their main business, now generating about 90% of their income. The burger operation runs seven days a week, from March to November.
Higgitt attributes the low prices to operational efficiency, bulk purchasing, and social media presence. By buying ingredients in bulk, he maintains a cost of about 50 pence, or roughly 68 cents, per burger. Social media, especially TikTok and YouTube, plays a significant role in attracting new customers.
Content creators frequently film and post about their experiences, which draws more visitors eager to try the affordable burger. Higgitt welcomes these creators, noting their impact on business. Besides burgers, the menu includes hot dogs, Spam sandwiches, and sausage sandwiches.
