Arrests Made Following Vandalism at Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

Several individuals were arrested over the weekend for allegedly vandalizing the newly refurbished Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. This incident prompted a strong reaction from President Donald Trump and led to heightened security measures at the site.

Journalist Emily Miller shared a two-minute video on X, showing a man in lime-green racing attire being questioned by a National Guardsman before his arrest by U.S. Park Police. The Washington Post identified the individual as David Hearn, 67, a former Olympian. He was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of damaging government property.

Hearn explained that he had completed a 52-mile bike ride when he noticed a partially detached pool liner and touched the water to check its condition. Contrary to Miller’s claims that Hearn grabbed a hose used by National Park Service workers to manage algae growth, Hearn said the hose was only touched by his bike tire. He maintained, “I didn’t vandalize anything.”

This incident followed previous security concerns at the Reflecting Pool. President Trump stated multiple arrests had been made and described vandalism of national monuments as serious crimes. He announced plans for immediate repairs.

National Guard and Park Service personnel have been deployed to manage security and maintenance, as issues with peeling paint and algae growth persist despite recent restoration efforts costing $14.8 million.
