Unauthorized fireworks in Rome sparked a stampede of horses during a late-night rehearsal for Italy’s Republic Day parade. Multiple riders and animals sustained injuries.
Details of the Incident
The chaos occurred near the ancient Baths of Caracalla where mounted units from Italy’s armed forces and police were preparing for the June 2 celebration. According to Reuters, roughly 35 horses fled through city streets after the unexpected fireworks.
Video footage showed horses galloping along Via Cristoforo Colombo as drivers captured the scene. The effort to recover the horses lasted until dawn the next day, with the last horse found about nine miles from the initial location.
Impact on Riders and Horses
Reuters reported that the fireworks began around 11:30 p.m., leading to panic among the ceremonial horses. Some riders were mounted, while others were leading horses by hand when the animals bolted.
A 22-year-old soldier suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung, though the injuries were not life-threatening. At least 15 horses were injured, yet none required euthanasia. The stampede also injured three young soldiers from the Montebello Lancers and a 29-year-old policewoman.
Official Response
Authorities are investigating the unauthorized fireworks near the rehearsal site. The Rome Local Police Command reported that four traffic police officers were nearby when the fireworks occurred.
ANSA revealed that one officer allegedly ignited a battery of fireworks about 200 yards from the horses. The officer, new to the force, was identified by local sources.
Rome police commander Mario De Sclavis expressed concerns, saying the incident damages the reputation of the Corps and its officers. He noted that necessary measures would be taken to hold the responsible parties accountable.
