Amtrak has resumed train services between New York and Philadelphia on Wednesday afternoon. This follows a suspension caused by two fires near the tracks in North Philadelphia. Amtrak Northeast announced in a post that trains will still face delays due to single tracking in the Philadelphia area. They expressed apologies for the inconvenience caused.
The fires led to a temporary halt due to firefighting efforts close to the tracks. This disruption occurred during a severe heat wave in Pennsylvania, with temperatures hitting triple digits and humidity affecting infrastructure. The heat has also fueled brush fires, resulting in widespread heat advisories.
Philadelphia Fire Communications Director Rachel Cunningham reported that sparks from a train likely started the two fires by igniting nearby brush. Over 300 firefighters were involved in tackling these blazes, which reached two-alarm status. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.
Details of the Fire Response
Cunningham informed Newsweek that the first fire was at North 2nd Street and West Erie Avenue around 1 p.m. Shortly after, a second fire ignited along the tracks at West Glenwood Avenue. Firefighters brought the first blaze under control by 2 p.m. and the second by just after 4 p.m. Wind conditions contributed to the fire’s spread, necessitating relief companies to support firefighters affected by the heat.
While trackside fires are not common, they occur when conditions are hot and dry. Firefighting crews are skilled in handling these situations. Prior to containment, Amtrak reported to Newsweek about the emergency personnel efforts in extinguishing a brush fire approximately five miles east of Gray 30th Street Station. The fire also spread to a nearby scrapyard.
Impact on Train Services
The fires and resulting service suspension impacted at least two routes. The 654 train from Harrisburg to Philadelphia and the 609 from Philadelphia to Harrisburg were canceled due to delays. The New York-Philadelphia route is one of the busiest in the Northeast Corridor, transporting tens of thousands daily. A complete service hold here can ripple through the entire East Coast rail network, affecting trains from Washington to Boston.
Future Steps
Amtrak continues to expect delays as services recover from the suspension. They plan to provide rolling updates throughout the afternoon. Travelers are encouraged to check the Amtrak app or website for real-time updates before arriving at stations.
