A’ja Wilson’s Impact on Women’s Basketball

Las Vegas Aces center A’ja Wilson has emerged as a leading figure in women’s basketball. Some even consider her the best basketball player overall. She confidently addresses discussions about being the greatest of all time (GOAT).

“It’s overwhelming,” Wilson shared with ESPN’s Malika Andrews in an interview that aired on July 30. “Thinking about the list of GOATs, it’s wild to hear my name among them. I feel I have more to achieve. When people mention it, I’m grateful. Yet, it feels unusual,” she added.

Wilson continued, “If I’m the GOAT, that’s great. To me, I’ve felt like the GOAT since ’96. It’s simply part of my journey.”

Wilson currently holds several top distinctions in the WNBA. She is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, MVP, Finals MVP, and a champion. Wilson is the first player in WNBA history to secure all four awards in a single season. As the 2018 No. 1 overall pick and an eight-time All-Star, she stands as the only four-time MVP in league history, maintaining a relentless pace.

Before Thursday’s game, Wilson led the WNBA in scoring, averaging 26.2 points per game, and blocks, averaging 2.0 per game. In 25 games for the 19-8 Aces, she has averaged 26.2 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.0 blocks, and 1.6 steals.

The Las Vegas Aces, having claimed three of the last four WNBA titles, are strong contenders to secure another championship this year.
