Nicolas Cage recently opened up about his decision to forgo roles in major franchise films in favor of projects he felt were more aligned with his personal and artistic desires. In an interview with Complex News, the 62-year-old actor discussed instances where he chose roles based on their appeal to him as an actor over potential commercial success.
Cage cited offers for two notable franchises: Jim Carrey’s “Dumb and Dumber” and “Spider-Man.” He explained his preference to star in “Leaving Las Vegas” and “Adaptation” instead. “In ‘Dumb and Dumber,’ I was offered the part of Harry Dunne,” Cage shared. He added that Jeff Daniels took on the role in the end.
He also turned down the role of the Green Goblin in “Spider-Man,” which was eventually taken by Willem Dafoe. Reflecting on his choices, Cage said, “Both those choices gave me more to do as an actor.” His portrayal in “Leaving Las Vegas” earned him both an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award.
For his work in “Adaptation,” where he played twin brothers Charlie and Donald, Cage earned another Academy Award nomination. He expressed that playing twins was a significant challenge. “To play twins in a movie was daunting, and I don’t know if I could do it again,” he remarked.
Cage recently spoke about his preparation for the 2024 film “The Surfer” with Entertainment Weekly. While practicing surfing, he experienced a rigorous session that was physically taxing. “I got pounded and literally got stuck in the rip tide,” Cage recalled.
In the context of family, Cage disclosed he consciously turned down roles in significant franchises like “Lord of the Rings” and “The Matrix.” Emphasizing his priority for family, Cage revealed that the extensive time required for shooting overseas would have separated him from his children. “I turned down ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Matrix’ because I didn’t want to be away from my son Weston,” Cage stated.
Cage is the father to Weston, Kal-El, and August Francesca with different partners. He underlined the importance of spending time with his children, sharing that his family always comes first.
