The Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial has attracted more visitors recently due to its unusual algae and discoloration issues. Comedian Josh Johnson highlighted this in a recent segment on ‘The Daily Show.’
Josh Johnson remarked, “Hey, kids, remember you wanted to go to Disneyland? Instead, we’re going to go see the world’s largest kombucha!” He humorously compared the pool’s algae situation to a fermented tea, capturing the unexpected tourism draw.
Johnson also reflected on the historical significance of the pool’s gatherings. “The last time we collected this many people around the Reflecting Pool was for civil rights,” he stated. He noted the shift from meaningful historical gatherings to today’s fascination with the pool’s current state.
Noting the practicalities, Johnson quipped, “Anyone who’s ever owned a swimming pool, fish tank, or a neglected bong won’t be surprised by the algae in the pool. With its dark bottom and exposure to hot weather, maintaining cleanliness is particularly challenging.” He cited experts from social media who echo these sentiments.
Further critiquing, Johnson commented on the response to the renovation efforts, likening it to poorly timed boasting. “Trump basically shot a buzzer-beating game-winning shot, turned around to celebrate, and instead missed completely, causing unintended consequences,” he joked. The pool’s transformation has indeed drawn nationwide curiosity.
