Mitchell Robinson’s Potential Impact and Injury Concerns for NBA Finals

4 weeks ago 0

The New York Knicks are preparing for their Western Conference opponents in the upcoming NBA Finals. A key concern has arisen with the potential injury of their backup big man, Mitchell Robinson. Reports from ESPN have confirmed that Robinson required surgery for a broken right pinkie finger. This development has led to fan concerns about his availability, which could significantly impact the team’s depth against a formidable opponent.

Stephen A. Smith, an ESPN analyst and avid Knicks supporter, discussed the situation on ‘First Take.’ He first heard about Robinson’s injury from DJ Clue, a hip-hop star. Smith emphasized the importance of Robinson’s presence in the Finals during his conversation with colleagues Jay Williams and Brian Windhorst.

“They’re supposed to be resting and getting treatment,” stated Smith. “Mitchell Robinson, you need to be ready for the Finals. A pinkie injury should not keep you out!”

Smith drew parallels to former NFL player Ronnie Lott, who once continued playing despite a finger injury. Although Robinson has his limitations, such as a 50 percent free-throw shooting rate, he excels in rebounding and defense. Smith was adamant about Robinson’s participation, stating the need for him to be ready to face formidable opponents.

Robinson’s participation is essential due to the presence of strong big men on opposing teams, such as Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein from the Oklahoma City Thunder, and San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama. These players are considered dominant in the paint, and Robinson’s role would be critical in defending against them.

Fortunately, a report by Shams Charania suggested that Robinson plans to play in Game 1. While his free-throw shooting remains a challenge for the Knicks, they have had ample rest, having achieved an 11-game win streak, including a sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Game 1 of the NBA Finals is set for Wednesday, June 3. The Knicks will hope that Robinson’s recovery will enable him to bolster their defenses for this crucial series.
