Sinner’s Streak Ends, Fonseca Defeats Djokovic

4 weeks ago 0

Jannik Sinner, the top-ranked men’s tennis player, faced a surprising defeat at Roland-Garros on Thursday. Although he was just one game from winning against Juan Manuel Cerundolo, ranked 56th, Sinner dealt with dizziness and lost in five sets. This loss ended his impressive 30-match winning streak.

With this defeat, the path opened for the first new Grand Slam winner since 2023, other than Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz. Novak Djokovic, with 39 years behind him, eyed this as his opportunity to secure a record 25th Grand Slam title, having last won the 2023 U.S. Open.

Yet, it was Brazil’s Joao Fonseca, a 19-year-old rising star, who seized the moment in their third-round match. Fonseca overcame Djokovic in an intense five-set match, becoming the first teenager to defeat Djokovic in a Grand Slam contest. His victory concluded with three straight aces, and Fonseca’s reaction on the court was one of awe and gratitude.

Reflecting on the match, Fonseca admitted he lacked belief initially, saying, “I actually didn’t. I just played. I just enjoy being on court. What a pleasure it was. What an idol we have, and it’s a pleasure just stepping on the court against him. It’s my first time stepping on the court against him, so just thanking him. Just very happy.”

Sinner’s exit and Alcaraz’s wrist injury have possibly denied Djokovic another prime chance to claim the coveted 25th title. Over two years, Djokovic has battled not just Alcaraz but also the passage of time, competing in several remarkable matches. Fonseca’s victory might signal the beginning of a new era. If Fonseca wins the tournament, he has a chance to join the new-age elite along with Alcaraz and Sinner, creating a trio rivalry for the next decade.

With Djokovic out, Roland-Garros will crown a new Grand Slam champion this year. As per ESPN, this event marks the first time in the Open Era that no former major champion has reached the Round of 16.
