Actress Donna Mills, well-known for her role in “Knot’s Landing,” made headlines after a spirited response to criticism about her appearance went viral. The 85-year-old actress had a social media moment when she shared a video responding to an Instagram user’s comment criticizing her for wearing “too much makeup for your age.”
In the video, Mills appeared in her usual glamorous style before briefly transforming into a character with gray hair, pearls, and wire-rimmed glasses. She humorously questioned, “Did you want me to look like this?” and confidently stated, “I like the way I look. This is my style, and style doesn’t have an expiration date.”
Mills’ video quickly gained traction online, accumulating over 125,000 likes, and received praise from fans and celebrities like Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, and Nancy Sinatra. On the Tamron Hall Show, Mills discussed her decision to respond to the comment. She emphasized that the issue was broader than her appearance, saying, “It’s about women in general and the way women feel about themselves.”
Mills expressed a desire to challenge such criticisms, aiming to inspire women to embrace their confidence and self-image, regardless of age. She was surprised by the widespread positive reaction to her message and was grateful that it resonated with so many people.
The conversation about age and beauty standards continued when Hall asked Mills why people still feel entitled to tell women how to dress and look. Mills noted that societal norms are changing, and people are living longer, healthier lives. She stated, “You don’t hit 70 or 75 or 80 and it’s over. It’s just a new time.”
Mills also touched on personal struggles with confidence in an industry that often overlooks aging women. She admitted to seeing imperfections in the mirror but maintains a positive outlook by addressing these feelings constructively.
Reflecting on her newfound social media fame, Mills wrote, “If you told me at 85 I’d be going viral on social media, I wouldn’t have believed you…but here we are.” She emphasized the importance of delivering her messages with positivity and humor.
Mills rose to prominence with her role as Abby Cunningham in “Knots Landing,” where her character was known for her distinctive style and fashion. She will soon appear in the upcoming thriller “Abused,” set for release this summer.
