The New York Mets claimed victory in the first Subway Series of the season, defeating the New York Yankees in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon. The game concluded in the 10th inning with the Mets securing a 7-6 win.
Dramatic 10th Inning
With runners on first and third and one out, Mets rookie Carson Benge was at the plate. He managed to hit a chopper over Yankees reliever Tim Hill’s head. Anthony Volpe and Max Schuemann, the Yankees infielders, collided as they attempted to make a play but couldn’t secure the ball. Marcus Semien took advantage and scored the winning run. Benge expressed confidence saying, “Once it went over the pitcher’s head, I kind of knew.”
Ninth-Inning Comeback
The Yankees had a 6-3 lead entering the bottom of the ninth. The tide turned when Tyrone Taylor came to bat, joining Benge and Juan Soto on base. With two outs, Taylor hit a home run off David Bednar, tying the game. This marked Taylor’s third home run of the season. He admitted uncertainty about the hit stating, “I didn’t know it was going to stay fair. I kind of waited there to see if it would.”

Yankees’ Struggles
The Yankees ended their nine-game road trip with a disappointing 2-7 record and now gear up for a seven-game homestand against the Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays. Aaron Judge emphasized the need to rebound quickly for upcoming division matches.
David Bednar, who blew the save for the second time in 12 attempts, expressed frustration as his ERA rose to 4.95. “Overall, it’s unacceptable, especially in that spot,” he acknowledged.
Mets’ Resolve
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza praised his team’s determination. “We get down. We get punched in the face. We get back up,” he stated. He viewed the win as a testament to the team’s tenacity, even when not at their best.
