A notable figure in the event is Ashwin Reynolds, who enjoyed luxury that he could hardly imagine. At 52, owning a construction company, Reynolds reflects on how apartheid barred people of color from elite spaces, including racetracks. In 2021, he made history by being the first person of color to own the horse that won the main race at Durban July.
