U.S. Pledges $1 Billion in Security Aid to Colombia Amid New Leadership

The United States has promised $1 billion in security assistance to Colombia following the inauguration of its new right-wing leader, Abelardo de la Espriella. This commitment came shortly after de la Espriella, a millionaire lawyer known for his dramatic style, assumed office for a four-year term. His campaign capitalized on public concerns about security.

“As a cornerstone of this renewed partnership, the United States, working with Congress, intends to announce $1 billion in assistance as part of a security package to support President (Abelardo) de la Espriella’s administration in achieving our shared goals,” stated the U.S. announcement. Despite never having held office, de la Espriella secured the endorsement of President Trump.

During his inauguration, held at Batallón Pichincha in Cali, Colombia, de la Espriella vowed to tackle armed insurgents, strengthen relations with the U.S., and reform the system. In his inaugural address, he emphasized a strong stance against narco-terrorism. “The option of dialogue is completely exhausted,” he declared, criticizing the prior administration’s attempts at peace talks with guerrillas.

After years of strained U.S.-Colombian relations under former President Gustavo Petro, who was Colombia’s first leftist president, de la Espriella is seen as a cooperative ally by the U.S. Petro had shifted focus in drug policy and unsuccessfully tried to negotiate peace with armed groups. The Colombian electorate, weary from ongoing violence and failed peace efforts, opted for de la Espriella, a political outsider.

De la Espriella, who is a dual U.S. and Colombian citizen, has adopted a military salute as his distinctive gesture. He has offered to station U.S. troops in Colombia and proposed aggressive measures like bombing jungle cocaine labs, constructing large-scale prisons, and reducing the size of government.
