Following a hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship, over 40 Americans face up to six weeks of quarantine. Dr. Kent Brantly, who experienced isolation after contracting Ebola in 2014, reassures current quarantined individuals. He expressed confidence in the teams handling their care. Brantly spent time in Emory University Hospital and mentioned that the staff there are prepared to manage such situations.
The outbreak resulted in three fatalities and 11 illnesses. It was identified during a month-long voyage in May. The 18 Americans aboard returned to the U.S. and entered quarantine in specialized facilities. Two are monitored at Emory University Hospital. The others joined them at the National Quarantine Unit at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. The World Health Organization noted they could remain isolated for up to 42 days, even though they tested negative.
Dr. Brantly spent three weeks in isolation at Emory University Hospital’s state-of-the-art biocontainment unit. This facility, established in 2005, includes a dedicated lab and rooms with HEPA-filtered, negative-pressure systems. These features ensure pathogens remain contained. Throughout his isolation, Brantly received constant medical care and underwent physical therapy. The staff also provided emotional and mental support.
Jake Rosmarin, a Boston social media creator, shares his quarantine experience at the Nebraska facility on Instagram. His room there includes a bed, smart TV, and spin bike. Nurses deliver meals daily, but he can also order takeout. He aims to maintain a positive outlook despite the confinement.
Carl Goldman, who quarantined at UNMC after contracting COVID-19 on the Diamond Princess in 2020, shared similar experiences. He spent time in a double-sealed room, with staff in hazmat suits delivering essential care. Eventually, he moved to another room and stayed for 20 more days. He enjoyed the support and camaraderie of the staff, even celebrating his birthday with them.
