Surviving Captivity: A Love Story from Kibbutz Nir Oz

1 month ago 0

My name is Arbel Yehoud, and I am 30 years old. Alongside my partner, 28-year-old Ariel Cunio, I grew up in the close-knit community of Kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel. Our lives were intertwined long before we could have imagined the challenges we would face together.

On October 7, 2023, a day that forever altered our lives, both Ariel and I were kidnapped by Hamas militants. Arbel endured 482 days in captivity, while Ariel’s ordeal lasted 738 days. We were abducted together but separated soon after, forced to face unimaginable trials apart.

“What sustained us during this time wasn’t just hope or strength—it was love.”

Growing up in the same area, our lives had always been in sync. Our parents were neighbors and friends, and eventually, love found us when we least expected it. Initially, we kept our relationship private, knowing Ariel had plans to travel abroad. Yet, despite the distance, our bond grew even stronger. Upon reuniting, we committed to building a future together.

We set up a home on the kibbutz, establishing a peaceful life full of shared joys like cooking, dancing, and dreaming of a family. In early October 2023, we adopted a puppy named Murph, marking a happy period in our lives.

However, our happiness was abruptly shattered on October 7 when Hamas launched an attack on Israel. Waking to the blaring sound of sirens, we hoped the gunfire meant help had arrived. Instead, we faced the horrifying reality of our home being breached by militants. They discovered us hiding, killed our beloved dog, and subjected us to physical and emotional torment. Our once peaceful home turned into a scene of despair.

During our forced journey past Ariel’s brother’s burning house, we were gripped by uncertainty about their fate. After a chaotic transport to Gaza and intense interrogation, we were tragically separated just hours after our capture.

In the ensuing months of isolation, each of us faced harsh conditions—hunger, fear, and a complete lack of information. The overwhelming loneliness and despair were constant challenges. Yet, we clung to memories of our life together. Arbel wrote and drew in a notebook, which eventually reached Ariel, serving as a emotional anchor amidst the darkness.

Both of us grappled with moments of desperation, contemplating the end. Yet, thoughts of each other provided the strength to continue, understanding the other’s survival depended on mutual endurance.

When Arbel was freed after 482 days, the relief was tempered by guilt over Ariel’s continued captivity. She devoted herself to advocacy, tirelessly working to raise awareness of the conditions faced by hostages.

Months later, beyond all expectations, we were blessed with a reunion. Ariel’s release after 738 days finally brought us back together, though our world has irrevocably changed.

The home we once cherished is lost, along with a significant part of our community and its history. Though the kibbutz suffered tremendously, our resilience and love drive us forward. We stand together, ready to rebuild and cherish the life we still have.
