Puerto Rican Voters Key to Republican Success

The U.S. House recently approved a bill allowing Puerto Rico to hold its first binding referendum regarding statehood or independence. However, this effort faces challenges in the Senate. Historically, midterm elections cost the ruling party seats in Congress, with Republicans now facing hurdles to retain their slim House majority. They need to engage Puerto Ricans, a misunderstood voter bloc.

The Puerto Rico Statehood Council, chaired by José Fuentes, released a poll conducted by McLaughlin and Associates. The poll shows widespread support for statehood among Hispanic voters at 68%, with 71% of Puerto Ricans in favor. Significantly, 78% of Republican Puerto Rican voters approve of statehood. More Republican Puerto Ricans back statehood than Democrats, at 69%.

The Republican party should note that supporting Puerto Rican statehood could attract Republican voters. The poll shows that 68% of Republican Puerto Ricans are more likely to vote for candidates supporting statehood. This suggests that Puerto Rican voters share conservative values such as a strong military and tough crime policies.

Winning over Puerto Rican voters is crucial, especially in districts with sizable Hispanic populations. Pennsylvania’s 7th District serves as an example, where Puerto Rican voters could determine election outcomes. This district is a prime target for Democrats and has a significant Puerto Rican and Dominican population.

Republicans don’t need to make statehood the core of their campaign. They should stop opposing it. Democrats, including Kamala Harris and DNC Chair Ken Martin, have expressed support for statehood. If Republicans let this issue slip away, Democrats could capitalize when they control Washington again.
