The Charlotte Hornets have announced that Muggsy Bogues, the shortest player in NBA history, will have his No. 1 jersey retired on February 11, 2027. Bogues, standing at 5 feet, 3 inches, becomes the third player in the organization’s history to receive this distinction, following Bobby Phills and Dell Curry.

Bogues has been a pivotal figure for the Hornets, both as a player and an ambassador, spending over 20 years with the team. During his ten seasons as a player, he emerged as a cornerstone for the franchise. He holds the franchise records for assists (5,557), assists per game (8.8), steals (1,067), and minutes played (19,768).

In a statement, the Hornets highlighted Bogues’s contributions, citing his enduring impact on the organization and the community. Bogues expressed his gratitude for the support from Hornets fans, saying, “Charlotte has been home to me and my family for so many years, and the support I’ve received from Hornets fans has meant everything to me.”

Bogues was an original member of the Hornets, selected in the 1988 NBA Expansion Draft. His career averages include 8.8 points, 8.8 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game in 632 games with the team. Despite his shorter stature, Bogues became one of the most recognizable figures in the NBA.

The Hornets co-chairmen, Rick Schnall and Gabe Plotkin, stated, “Honoring the players who helped build this franchise is an important part of our commitment to Hornets history. Muggsy was here from the beginning and played with heart, toughness, and competitive spirit.”

Bogues’s legacy extends beyond his on-court achievements. As a role model, he demonstrated that size should not limit one’s potential, inspiring generations with his determination and passion. His contributions to basketball and commitment to his team and community remain an integral part of the Hornets’ identity.
