Illinois Men’s Basketball Team Aims for Success with Returning and New Talent

44 minutes ago 0

David Mirković fondly recalls the excitement following the Illinois men’s basketball team’s thrilling Elite Eight win over Iowa. The public greeted them as they arrived at Willard Airport, celebrating the team’s first Final Four appearance in 21 years. The team, praised for its promising freshman duo of Keaton Wagler and Mirković, hopes to recreate its triumphs in the upcoming season.

As they prepare for a new season, changes within the team are notable. Wagler has moved to the NBA following his outstanding freshman season. Kylan Boswell and Ben Humrichous have also departed, described as pivotal role players by coach Brad Underwood.

However, key players such as Mirković, wing Andrej Stojaković, and centers Tomislav and Zvonimir Ivišić are set to return. Their experience will be critical as they are ranked third in the AP poll, ahead of their opening game against Fairleigh Dickinson. The team aims to maintain their health, which has been a concern recently.

Prior to an exhibition loss against Baylor, Mirković wore a boot due to foot surgery. Underwood anticipates Mirković might miss some season games. Stojaković and Zvonimir Ivišić exited the same game after head injuries, and Tomislav Ivišić left with a knee issue. The Illini remain motivated to heal and improve after last season’s loss to Connecticut in the national semifinal.

The challenge is reaching the peak of college basketball and waiting another year to strive for that again, said Stojaković. Patience and maturity are key throughout this season.

Returning players like Mirković and Stojaković, recognized as preseason All-Big Ten selections, are keen to build on last year’s achievements. Nonetheless, the team needs contributions from new players to compensate for the loss of Wagler, who averaged 17.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.2 assists.

Freshman Quentin Coleman and Providence transfer Stefan Vaaks emerge as key figures. Coleman, known as a top shooting guard, switched his commitment from Wake Forest to Illinois just before the Final Four. Underwood praised Coleman’s competitive nature, noting his improved shooting and defense, although acknowledging occasional over-aggressiveness.

Moreover, Coleman is part of a talented freshman class featuring Ethan Brown. Vaaks, joining from Providence, had an impressive season averaging 15.8 points. Mirković highlighted Vaaks’ shooting skills and eagerness to learn, although he initially had defensive concerns.

The upcoming season promises a faster-paced offense, different from last year when it was adjusted for Wagler’s style. Underwood noted the need to win tight games; four overtime losses last season highlight this requirement. He needs role players to fill the gaps left by Boswell and Humrichous and a stronger defensive presence alongside their dynamic offense.

Illinois faces a challenging schedule with early games against high-ranked opponents like Texas Tech and Duke. Underwood expects rapid growth from the freshmen as the veterans guide them. Shared experiences from returning players will prove invaluable, but the team has a clean slate from last year.

Supporting teammates through challenges is crucial, noted Stojaković, emphasizing unity and strength in tough times.

As Mirković recovers from foot surgery, Underwood remains optimistic about his versatile play and leadership. Mirković’s skills, including versatility in all five positions, make him a strong asset. Stojaković’s aggressive playing style, contributing to his NCAA performance, remains a focus this season. Underwood aims for smarter shot selections from Stojaković, noting opportunities for improvement.

Tomislav Ivišić, playing a significant role, shows commendable work ethic and agility. Underwood believes Ivišić, known for his face-up game, can maintain his dominant performance contingent on health.

Ranked third, the Illinois team meets expectations head-on, chasing its first national championship. Underwood emphasizes this team’s need to create its own identity and progress through teamwork and determination.

This is a new group. Let’s work hard to find a better identity, said Underwood. Our veterans are hungry to improve and overcome prior setbacks.
