At the Politics and Prose bookstore in Washington, D.C., excitement filled the air as fans gathered for a midnight release party. The occasion marked the launch of A Court of Splintered Harmony, the latest book in Sarah J. Maas’ beloved A Court of Thorns and Roses series. Attendees, adorned in leather costumes and faerie accessories, eagerly awaited the newest installment.

Among the crowd was Dalia Luque, an enthusiastic reader. Despite the possibility of pre-ordering the book online, Luque chose to join fellow fans in person. She shared, “I just want to have fun with the community and get to share with my friends as we read along.” The event offered activities like trivia, face painting, and enjoying champagne, enhancing the experience for participants.

The face painting, led by staffer Amber Lovold, featured designs inspired by the seven territories of the ACOTAR world. Luque opted for a design representing the Summer Court, showcasing her fan allegiance. The series, known for its engaging mix of romance and fantasy, has attracted a loyal following.

The book release marks the end of a five-year hiatus since the last installment. Fans like Ivana Wong, who won the evening’s costume contest with her starry black dress and flowy cape, expressed anticipation for the new book. Wong shared her dedication, stating she planned to take days off work to immerse herself in the story.

For many attendees, such events also provided a chance to connect with other enthusiasts. Chastity Mayhaus, new to the area, attended to forge new friendships and possibly uncover local book clubs. “I’m hoping to make some friends, just talk to some people,” she expressed, capturing the communal spirit of the gathering.

Nicole Davidow, the event organizer from Politics and Prose, acknowledged the growing demand for in-person events among online communities. She noted, “I think that online community wants to be in a room together.” Originally planning for 50 attendees, the event saw around 70 people come together to celebrate.

As midnight arrived, fans hurried to purchase their copies of the highly anticipated book. With the new hardcover in hand, readers left the bookstore, eager to dive into the next chapter of the fantastical ACOTAR universe.
