Indianapolis Colts Restructure with Key Trades

1 hour ago 0

The Indianapolis Colts have initiated a major restructuring of their team by trading some key players. One of the significant moves includes shipping defensive tackle DeForest Buckner back to the San Francisco 49ers, a team that originally drafted him in 2016 and traded him to the Colts in 2020. This trade, pending a physical, brings a fourth-round pick in the 2027 draft to the Colts.

Earlier the same day, interim General Manager Ed Dodds made another pivotal trade by sending Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks. This deal has added a 2027 third-round pick, a 2027 fourth-round pick, and a 2028 fifth-round pick to Indianapolis’s future draft assets.

The Colts are in discussions with other teams about further trades involving players such as running back Jonathan Taylor, defensive tackle Grover Stewart, and receivers Keenan Allen and Josh Downs.

The trades indicate the team’s shift in focus from the current season to future prospects. This strategic move might lead to a challenging remainder of the season for the Colts, potentially impacting head coach Shane Steichen’s position, as performance improvement is a priority.

The New York Jets, meanwhile, have reasons to celebrate. They previously traded cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Colts, receiving first-round picks in return, including a 2027 pick. With the Colts’ roster weakening further due to recent trades, the Jets stand to benefit as their acquired draft pick potentially increases in value.

These significant changes underscore the Colts’ intent to build for the future, although they come with risks and possible setbacks in the current season.
