Israeli Military Launches Extensive Drills Amid Rising Tensions

1 hour ago 0

The Israeli military initiated extensive domestic exercises on Sunday. These drills aim to counter surprise infiltrations and raids across northern and central Israel. The military mobilized multiple divisions and air assets amid growing regional tensions.

This 48-hour exercise follows concerns that rising tensions might lead to dangerous miscalculations. The drills include Northern Command’s 210th Division, West Bank Division, and Central Command’s 98th and 96th divisions along with the Israeli Air Force.

The maneuvers, scheduled before the October 27 elections, aim to maintain alertness and readiness. They strengthen defense capabilities using aerial assets. Military scenarios practiced include surprise attacks and infiltrations into Israeli territory, integrating lessons from recent conflicts.

Dr. Ehud Eilam, an Israeli national security analyst, explained that the exercise targets non-state actors with or without Iranian support. This includes entities in Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. While some receive backing from Iran, others might act independently.

The exercise sends a message ahead of election day to prevent disruptions. It follows Iranian military displays, including missile launches. These actions have heightened Israeli military alertness.

Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir highlighted increasing escalation risks. Recent deployments include reinforcing troop positions across sectors to ensure stability.

Further mutual deterrence comes from previous incidents, such as Israeli jets flying over Syrian and Iraqi airspace. Despite signals of readiness, exercises carry risks, especially if movements are misinterpreted as preparation for attacks.

The 1973 Yom Kippur War offers a historical parallel. Egypt and Syria masked preparations, leading to a strategic surprise against Israel. Current mutual suspicion heightens the chance of unintended conflict, as noted by Eilam.

Both Israel and Iran remain cautious but ready. They signal readiness without wanting to initiate conflict. Future Israeli actions depend on U.S. authorization.
