Nick Faldo Critiques Bryson DeChambeau’s Strategy Ahead of The Open

Nick Faldo, a six-time major champion and a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, recently commented on Bryson DeChambeau’s golfing strategy. Faldo, 68, criticized the LIV Golf star for what he perceives as a lack of strategic insight. According to Faldo, DeChambeau has yet to master effective strategy, especially when transitioning from LIV Golf tournaments to other competitions. He shared these thoughts during an interview with Sky Sports.

Nick Faldo remarked, “That’s a whole part of the story, how they’re superstars at LIV then come over and can’t do it. So that’s all another story. Then they go back to be superstars. He has — I’d say it to his face — he has zero clue of strategy.”

Reflecting on DeChambeau’s comments from the previous year, Faldo pointed out the golfer’s miscalculated approach to playing on links courses. Faldo stressed the importance of navigating the course by threading the fairway and understanding its unique obstacles rather than attempting to overpower them.

DeChambeau’s comment, “I’m going to go out and attack the links,” was noted by Faldo as flawed. Faldo emphasizes the necessity to thread the course, feeding the ball down the fairway while acknowledging the course’s natural features.

Despite DeChambeau’s apparent skill, Faldo criticized his approach to the game, emphasizing strategic adjustment. Faldo shared his observations, stating that even with perfect shots, players can still miss the fairway due to unexpected factors such as divots.

DeChambeau’s performance this season has been less than stellar, with missed cuts at The Masters, The U.S. Open, and the PGA Championship. He did secure qualification for this year’s Open Championship after a top 10 finish the previous year. However, to make the cut at this tournament, DeChambeau will need to demonstrate improvement in his golfing strategy and performance.

Additionally, DeChambeau has a financial incentive to perform well at The Open, as he is aiming for a lucrative $500 million deal after his current LIV Golf contract expires.
