New Mexico Resists Trump’s Proposal to Rename the State

31 minutes ago 0

Gregg Hull, a Republican candidate for governor in New Mexico, strongly opposed President Donald Trump’s proposal to rename the state to ‘New America’. Earlier on Monday, Trump posted on Truth Social suggesting the name change under the claim that “we are not Mexico, we are the United States of America!” According to Trump, this change would enhance the state’s value and prestige, potentially increasing incomes and home values as well as addressing election integrity concerns.

Hull responded later the same day on X, asserting that New Mexico’s name should remain unchanged. This sentiment is not new from Trump, who has previously proposed other geographical name changes, like rebranding the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and suggesting names like ‘Trump Strait’ for the Strait of Hormuz amidst tensions with Iran.

When queried about Hull’s reaction, the White House directed Newsweek to Trump’s statements. Hull emphasized the importance of the state’s identity, rooted in its diverse culture, scenic landscapes, and resilient people. He stated, “That identity is never up for negotiation. EVER.” Hull further highlighted that his campaign focuses on issues like job creation, economic stability, energy independence, and cost relief.

Midterm elections often reflect the political climate impacting the ruling party, typically resulting in seat losses. Trump was defeated by Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election in New Mexico by a margin of approximately six percent. Trump’s popularity on various policy matters like the economy and immigration continues to wane as affordability becomes a significant concern for Americans. In New Mexico, gas prices remain higher than the national average.

Criticism of Trump’s state renaming idea surfaced last month in the Albuquerque Journal. An article by Ryan Boetel described the proposal as “so elementary and such low-hanging fruit.” He advised dismissing this tactic, suggesting it resembles attempts to provoke reactions through obnoxious behavior. Additionally, MapQuest responded to Trump’s previous geographical renaming efforts with a humorous jab on X.

New Mexico legislators reacted to Trump’s idea. Democrat Senator Ben Ray Lujan affirmed that the state’s name holds historical importance, existing long before the U.S. was established. Democratic Governor Michelle Grisham echoed similar sentiments, dismissing Trump’s proposal and highlighting New Mexico’s achievements, including universal childcare and health care subsidies. She noted that despite past claims, the state’s election processes are secure and reliable.

Newsweek reached out to the Republican Party of New Mexico for comments regarding the situation.
