Boy with Hearing Loss Experiences Joyful Moment with Hearing Aids

6 minutes ago 0

After four years of silence, a young boy named Titan finally heard his parents’ voices clearly. Born in 2021 with hearing loss, Titan was diagnosed with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, limiting his hearing to about 30 percent of normal capacity. His mother, Kaitlynn Johnson, shared the challenges they faced and the hope they held for Titan’s future.

Challenges with Early Development

Titan’s hearing loss impacted his speech and development significantly during his early years. His mother expressed concerns about his progress in preschool and the possibility of delaying kindergarten due to his delayed knowledge of nursery rhymes and alphabets. “Since he couldn’t hear well, what he thought was right was often incorrect,” Johnson explained, noting how this affected his speech development.

A New Beginning with Hearing Aids

In October 2025, Titan received hearing aids, marking a significant milestone. Johnson captured the moment the devices were activated. The audiologist started with a lower volume to avoid overwhelming Titan. His joyful laughter upon hearing full sound for the first time brought his family to tears. “We were overwhelmed with happiness,” Johnson remarked, adding that the realization of how different his life would be was both poignant and gratifying.

Hearing his parents’ laughter and his own for the first time was a powerful experience for Titan. The young boy enjoyed the new world of sounds around him, giggling as he explored them.

Understanding Bilateral Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Bilateral sensorineural hearing loss refers to impaired hearing in both ears due to inner ear or auditory nerve damage. It’s the most common permanent hearing loss type in children, varying from mild to severe. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that over 6,000 infants born in 2022 had permanent hearing loss, affecting about one to two infants per 1,000 births in the U.S.

Audiologist Kira Savin highlights that hearing loss can significantly impact speech, language acquisition, and development. Difficulties may include distinguishing sounds, clear pronunciation, vocabulary building, and language understanding. These issues can also affect learning, attention, and academic performance, especially during the critical developmental years.

The Role of Hearing Aids and Support

Savin stresses that hearing loss need not limit cognitive potential. Consistent hearing aid use, speech therapy, and family support enable children like Titan to achieve their potential. Titan wears his hearing aids consistently, removing them only for specific activities. His development has improved markedly in the past year, attending speech therapy twice weekly and making significant strides.

Johnson’s video of Titan’s first experience with his hearing aids has garnered over 1.4 million views on TikTok. She shares that the progress over the past year is deeply moving and aims for Titan’s story to inspire others. “Beyond his development, we hope people see a child who is loved, capable, and whose journey points toward faith,” she said.
