James Beard Awards Highlight Immigration and Resistance

The James Beard Awards, a prestigious event in the restaurant industry, took place on Monday night in Chicago. Established in 1991, these awards celebrate excellence in culinary arts. At this year’s ceremony, themes of immigration and resilience were prominent.

Among the top winners, Kalaya, a popular restaurant in Philadelphia, received the honor of outstanding restaurant. Michael Tusk, co-owner of Quince and Cotogna in San Francisco with his wife Lindsay, was named outstanding chef. Dana Street from the Portland, Maine restaurant group, which includes Fore Street and Scales, earned the outstanding restaurateur award. Lei, located in Manhattan’s Chinatown, won best new restaurant.

Governor JB Pritzker of Illinois, running for re-election, congratulated the nominees from the stage. He applauded the Chicago restaurant Smyth, recently acclaimed as the best restaurant in North America by the World’s 50 Best organization. Acknowledging his Ukrainian heritage, Pritzker emphasized the contributions of immigrant communities, stating that many face challenges under current U.S. leadership. His remarks were met with applause.

Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson echoed the governor’s sentiments, affirming that the city remains steadfast against authoritarian influences.

Adrian Torres, awarded best emerging chef for his innovative Mexican American cuisine at Maximo in Houston, expressed pride in his immigrant background, highlighting his experience as a DACA recipient and delivering his gratitude in Spanish.
