A federal judge strongly criticized officials from the Trump administration on Monday regarding the removal of trees from a historic golf course in Washington, D.C. The judge accused the government of damaging its credibility with the court.
Multiple reports on social media platform X highlighted that U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes expressed her frustration during a court hearing about the tree removal activities at East Potomac Golf Links. The National Park Service initiated tree removal as part of renovation plans supported by the administration.
Judge Reyes, who was appointed by former President Joe Biden, emphasized that she had consistently directed the government to inform her before proceeding with significant demolition activities. Despite this, more than 500 trees were removed without sufficient notice. According to social media accounts, Reyes stated, “This lack of communication has completely cost the government its credibility in this case.” She further expressed her disappointment by saying, “I trusted you all not to do precisely what you have done.”
When attorneys from the Justice Department mentioned they were unaware of the specifics concerning the tree-cutting plans, Reyes firmly responded, “Ignorance is not an excuse.”
The judge ordered an immediate halt to tree removal activities, which will remain in place until at least 7 a.m. on Tuesday. She warned of contempt proceedings if her order was violated.
The ongoing dispute involves plans by the Trump administration to transform the 106-year-old public golf course into a championship-level venue. This renovation has sparked significant opposition and legal challenges.
