Debate Challenge in Texas Senate Race: Rove Pressures Paxton

1 day ago 0

Republican strategist Karl Rove questioned whether Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton will debate Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico, suggesting that avoiding the debate might cost Paxton the election. During a discussion with Democratic strategist David Axelrod at the Economic Club of Chicago, Rove highlighted the importance of a debate for Paxton’s campaign in the closely watched Senate race. Rove stated, “If he doesn’t debate, I think he loses.” He also added, “If he debates, the question is, ‘Is he going to be able to go on the offense?’”

When Axelrod implied Paxton avoids debates due to inexperience, Rove disagreed, saying, “The question is, does he have the guts to do it?” Talarico continues to challenge Paxton for a televised debate on Fox News. A Fox spokesperson noted the network’s willingness to host the debate if both candidates agree. Although Paxton adviser Nick Maddux mentioned he’s open to debate, no event has been scheduled. Reports suggest Paxton’s campaign has turned down various debate propositions, including a CNN debate.

Polling and Campaign Dynamics

A polling average by PollsMax shows Talarico barely leading Paxton by 0.2 percentage points. Other surveys reflect a narrow range from a Democratic lead to a slight Republican advantage. A Fox News poll indicated Talarico with an 8-point net positive personal rating, while Paxton’s ratings were unfavorable. Among Republicans, negative views of Paxton are six times greater than Democrats’ views of Talarico.

With polls showing a tight race, a recent Barbara Jordan Public Policy Research and Survey Center poll found Talarico ahead by 47 percent to Paxton’s 46 percent, with 3 percent supporting another candidate and 4 percent undecided. Rove’s comments come as part of a broader critique of Paxton, suggesting Republicans might fare better if former Senator John Cornyn had been the nominee. Rove’s remarks came at the Texas Tribune Festival, where he noted private conversations with Republicans who felt the race was unexpectedly competitive.

Campaign Controversies and President Trump’s Remarks

Paxton is under scrutiny due to leaked audio and his refusal to commit to a debate. During a rally, President Donald Trump joked about Paxton, calling him “a pain in the ass,” referencing Paxton’s support after the 2020 election. Despite the jest, Trump endorsed Paxton as “the greatest attorney general in the United States of America.”

Upcoming Voting and Election Themes

Early voting in Texas begins on October 19 and runs until October 30, with Election Day on November 3. Key campaign issues include affordability, healthcare, ethics, immigration enforcement, border security, and alignment with Trump’s policies. Discussions among Texas political observers have pointed to border security, cost of living, and ethics controversies as central race issues.

AI Issues in the Campaign

Artificial intelligence has become a pivotal topic in the Senate race. Paxton argues the U.S. must compete with China in AI, advocating for limits on data centers’ energy and water use. He proposes banning Chinese technology in U.S. data centers and holding companies accountable for harmful AI use. Talarico highlights AI as a consumer protection and affordability issue, advocating that AI companies should bear costs for power and infrastructure instead of Texans. He proposes an “AI dividend” to ensure economic gains from AI benefit Americans. Both candidates support continued AI innovation and increased oversight of data centers.
