On October 1, 2026, Pakistan conducted airstrikes in Afghanistan, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 individuals. The United Nations mission in the country reported that most of those killed were children. The strikes have sparked accusations between Pakistan and Afghanistan’s Taliban government.
Pakistan claimed the airstrikes targeted militants from insurgent groups responsible for attacks inside Pakistan. Meanwhile, the Afghan Taliban accused Pakistan of aggression, stating that the airstrikes hit civilian homes, causing the deaths of women and children. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) confirmed the fatalities and injuries but did not officially attribute the strikes to Pakistan.
“UNAMA has confirmed that at least 10 civilians were killed, most of them children, and 9 people injured in airstrikes,” the United Nations Mission in Afghanistan stated.
The airstrikes occurred in Afghanistan’s Kunar and Helmand provinces. Zabihullah Mujahid, the chief spokesperson for the Afghan regime, reported that three civilian homes were destroyed and condemned the bombings as acts of aggression.
Pakistan’s Ministry of Information disputed this account. In a statement to CBS News, the ministry described the airstrikes as “intelligence-driven” and “well planned.” They claimed strikes targeted militant hideouts and camps, resulting in the deaths of 22 terrorists. They further claimed the destruction of “large quantities of weapons and ammunition.”
“The threat to Pakistan emanates from Afghanistan. Our action precisely targeted the terrorist hubs,” Pakistan’s information ministry stated.
Pakistan insisted that their operations took “maximum precautions” to avoid collateral damage. Nevertheless, videos from Helmand province depicted residents searching through the rubble of destroyed homes. Ebad Khan, a resident of Kunar province, described a tragic incident where an airstrike killed a family that had just relocated to the area.
“They had children and livestock. They had just moved from another district,” he said. “Unfortunately, all six members of the family were killed, including children.”
Throughout the year, cross-border clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan have intensified, with several Pakistani airstrikes occurring inside Afghanistan. Both countries accuse each other of harboring terrorist groups along their border, leading to a volatile situation. UNAMA has reported over 1,100 civilian casualties in Afghanistan due to these tensions, highlighting the ongoing conflict between the neighboring nations.
