Aimee Bock Sentenced for Massive Fraud Scheme
Aimee Bock, identified as the orchestrator of the ‘Feeding Our Future’ fraud scheme, has been sentenced to 41.5 years in prison by a judge in Minnesota. This scheme involved the misappropriation of nearly $250 million in COVID-19 funding intended to feed children in need. Bock’s legal team argued that the actions of other individuals were beyond her control. However, prosecutors emphasized the significant damage and loss of public trust resulting from her criminal activities.
Florida Woman Charged with Cancer Scam
In an unrelated scam case, authorities in Florida have arrested Maribeth Ellen Jones, a 51-year-old resident of Bonita Springs. She has been charged with grand theft after falsely claiming to have cancer, deceiving over 200 people and accumulating more than $40,000 for paying off personal debts.
Jones reportedly told residents in her community, where she worked as an activities director, that she was undergoing cancer treatment. This led to widespread financial support from those who believed her plight. Additionally, community members organized a GoFundMe page whose proceeds were funneled into her personal bank account, along with cash and personal checks from residents.
Further investigation by the Collier County Sheriff’s Office revealed Jones had no cancer and used the donations to settle personal liabilities. Detectives noted that she maintained her deception by pretending her health was deteriorating and even had community members cut her hair to suggest she was preparing for chemotherapy.
A GoFundMe representative stated that fundraisers linked to Jones have been removed and her account banned. The platform refunded more than $41,000 to donors under their Giving Guarantee policy, ensuring donors receive their money back in suspicious cases.
According to Sheriff Kevin Rambosk, this case is particularly shocking as it takes advantage of people’s generosity. He asserted that lying to exploit the goodwill in Collier County will not go unpunished and undermines faith in legitimate fundraising efforts.
