Thousands in Gary, Indiana, Endure Prolonged Power Outage After Storm

Yolanda Ojeda, age 65, finds herself among numerous residents of Gary, Indiana, who have been without electricity since August 11. Prepared for power outages, she possessed a generator. However, when the power failed, the generator wouldn’t start, leaving her in the dark. Despite long work hours at Cleveland-Cliffs in East Chicago, Ojeda returns home late to a powerless environment and navigates cautiously due to the lack of streetlights and downed power lines. Ojeda expresses her difficulties and continues to hold hope that power will be restored soon, acknowledging others in worse situations.

Residents of other towns like Hammond, East Chicago, Lake Station, Portage, New Chicago, and Ogden Dunes are equally awaiting updates from NIPSCO, which hasn’t provided precise restoration timelines for them as of yet. According to NIPSCO’s website, 26,836 Gary residents remained without power as of Tuesday afternoon.

Gary Mayor Eddie Melton assured residents of the city’s commitment to aid them through the crisis, mentioning efforts to connect people with necessary resources and facilitate community recovery.

Ojeda witnessed a power line fall in her yard due to a neighbor’s tree, yet there’s been no repair activity from NIPSCO or its contractors at her property.

Throughout NIPSCO’s service area, 95,161 residents face ongoing power outages. NIPSCO’s statement promises mobilization of resources, including crews, contractors, and aid from the Indiana National Guard, to restore services. The restoration work prioritizes major infrastructure, which can extend delays in service resumption for individual neighborhoods.

Each community’s restoration depends upon system needs and safety concerns to achieve efficient recovery.

Other residents, like Ollicia England, share the challenge of surviving without power. Her aunt depends on a heart monitor, prompting them to acquire generators, costing them hundreds of dollars. England empathizes with older adults who lack necessary equipment and endure uncomfortable conditions at home. Similarly, Moses Kearney faces mounting expenses due to reliance on generators for cooking and electricity, concerned about delays in restoration.

Derek Zugic, whose family owns several properties in Gary, discusses persistent outages and the challenges of anticipating damage due to overgrown trees threatening power lines.

Amid ongoing restoration efforts, some community resources like the Calumet Township Trustee’s Office have exhausted emergency provisions. Nonetheless, they urge residents to connect with local authorities for further aid. Meanwhile, events organized by the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana and Gary Community Schools aim to distribute food, addressing immediate needs.
