A Los Angeles building, standing for nearly a century, is now welcoming guests in a novel way after a major restoration. Originally constructed in 1931 as Bethany Presbyterian Church in Silver Lake, the structure has been converted into Hotel Lucile. The 25-room boutique hotel opened on September 14, according to a news release shared with Fox News Digital.
Through the years, the property served varied roles. Initially a church, it later operated as a theater and antique market before becoming a hotel. The latest transformation spanned about seven and a half years, as shared by Anthony Gutierrez, Hotel Lucile’s opening general manager.
The restoration aimed to repurpose the building while preserving features from its days as a house of worship. The property’s original elements, like stained-glass windows, wooden beams, high ceilings, and steel-framed windows remain intact.
The chapel’s transformation stands out, now the hotel’s restaurant and dining room.
Gutierrez noted that nearly every aspect of the chapel was preserved, including the wood flooring, beams, and stained-glass windows. Renovations involved removing the original wood flooring, installing modern electrical and plumbing systems, and enhancing soundproofing for guest rooms before restoring the flooring.
About 90% of the dining room retains its original state. Renovating a building nearing 100 years old posed challenges in the lengthy redevelopment process. Gutierrez mentioned unexpected obstacles until the occupancy certificate was obtained.
Balancing modern requirements with preserving the original architectural elements proved to be a painstaking endeavor. Nonetheless, the property now features an art collection, with large hand-painted murals in the former chapel and other artworks throughout.
Some pieces belong to a permanent collection; others are available for purchase. Modern additions include an Erewhon-curated minibar and a traveling martini cart in the evenings.
Gutierrez expressed that blending old and new offers travelers a unique hotel experience.
He suggested the comfort of familiar surroundings but noted that trying something different can enhance a trip or staycation.
