A Senior’s Journey to Sobriety and Independence

11 hours ago 0

Dear Eric,

I am a 71-year-old woman with a 79-year-old boyfriend. We have been in a relationship for over a decade. Despite our long relationship, we meet only once a week due to several reasons. The distance between us is one hour, we are at different points in our lives, and we both value our personal space.

Recently, I find myself wanting to let go of the drinking, the drugs, and even the boyfriend. It feels like it’s time to embrace a lifestyle focused on health and independence.

As I reflect on the choices I’ve made, I realize the importance of prioritizing my well-being. Living a healthier life could bring peace and satisfaction. Parting ways with substances and relationships that no longer serve me might be necessary to achieve this.

Making such life-altering decisions at my age is daunting. Yet, the prospect of living a more fulfilled life keeps me motivated. Support from friends, community, or professional resources might help navigate this transition.

Ultimately, letting go of the familiar is challenging, but my desire for a positive change propels me forward. I am hopeful that taking these steps will lead to a better, brighter future.
