Alexander Zverev Triumphs in U.S. Open Men’s Singles

Alexander Zverev emerged victorious in the U.S. Open men’s singles final, defeating American Ben Shelton in four sets. This win marks Zverev’s second Grand Slam title in 2026, following his success at the French Open earlier in the year. As the No. 1 seed for the first time in a Grand Slam, Zverev capitalized on Shelton’s nerves during his debut major final, securing the win with scores of 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2.

After a thrilling semifinal victory against fellow American Francis Tiafoe, Shelton was in pursuit of becoming the first American man to claim a Grand Slam title since Andy Roddick’s triumph at the U.S. Open in 2003. Additionally, Shelton made history as the first Black American man to reach a U.S. Open final since Arthur Ashe in 1972.

Zverev showcased his dominance in Grand Slam tournaments this year. Despite his commanding lead in the match, he briefly appeared oblivious to his victory. As the final point concluded, Zverev initially stood behind the baseline as if preparing to continue play. Moments later, he realized his accomplishment, raising his arms in celebration.
