Additionally, Michigan’s 8th District has shifted from “Lean Democrat” to “Likely Democrat.”

Both Florida and Michigan supported Trump statewide in 2024. Trump won Florida with over 6.1 million votes and carried Michigan with about 2.82 million votes, narrowly defeating former Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump had also secured victories in the specific districts in 2024, highlighting the importance of Cook’s newest ratings. In Michigan, Trump won the 10th District by approximately 7 points and the 8th by about 2 points, according to Cook’s findings.

Democratic Representative Kathy Castor currently represents it, but the race was considered Lean Republican after redistricting. It’s now rated as a Toss Up, following Florida’s primary elections, where new data, including polling, boosted the Democratic position, according to Cook. In 2024, Trump would have won this redrawn district by 11 percent.

Craig Agranoff, a political professor at Florida Atlantic University, stated to Newsweek on Tuesday, “The shift of Florida’s 14th from Lean Republican to toss up is notable but fits the broader pattern of ratings moving toward Democrats as the midterm environment hardens.” Agranoff added, “Redistricting made the seat more Republican on paper, with Trump carrying it by double digits, so structurally, it does not lean Democratic. However, a well-established incumbent like Kathy Castor can still keep a competitive position in a challenging national climate.”

In Michigan’s 10th District, now deemed a Toss Up, the race has become competitive following Representative John James’ departure to pursue a gubernatorial bid. Trump previously won this district in 2024, adding another instance of Democrats posing a challenge in zones that showed support for the president two years earlier.

This left Smith less than three months to mount a campaign against incumbent Democratic Representative Kristen McDonald Rivet. McDonald Rivet secured the district by 7 points in 2024, even as Trump carried it by 2, and she enters the general election with a strong financial advantage, according to Cook.
