Sen. Darline Graham’s Candidacy Under Scrutiny Following Debate Comments

2 hours ago 0

Senator Darline Graham, appointed to fill her late brother Senator Lindsey Graham’s seat, acknowledged her limited knowledge of national security during a South Carolina GOP Senate debate. She seeks to secure a full six-year term, competing against Rep. Ralph Norman.

This admission came as a surprise during the GOP Senate runoff in South Carolina when a moderator questioned her about Taiwan and the South China Sea’s significance in national security. In response, Graham stated, “National security is not my thing, not my area of expertise.” Despite this, she emphasized her strong support for the military, citing her brother’s 33-year Air Force service and her father’s military background.

President Donald Trump supports Graham’s candidacy, having encouraged her to pursue a full term and endorsed her after her Senate appointment by Governor Henry McMaster. This endorsement underscores her political campaign.

“Are Taiwan and the South China Sea national security issues for the United States, and if so, why or how?” the moderator queried during the debate.

The debate provoked various reactions. Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley expressed concern on X, noting that Lindsey Graham was well-versed in national security and highlighting the critical nature of such knowledge for a U.S. senator.

Tara Servatius, a South Carolina talk-show host, remarked on social media about Graham’s inability to address foreign policy questions effectively, highlighting a “softball question” about China and Taiwan.

In a post-debate discussion, Graham shared her perspective, emphasizing that South Carolinians prioritize economic issues over international territorial disputes. This viewpoint mirrors her stance during a Fox News interview in July, where she encouraged her brother to address everyday voter concerns like groceries, gas, and healthcare more than foreign policy.

Another notable moment in the debate was Graham’s incorrect statement regarding South Carolina’s population, mistakenly claiming it hosts 50 million residents, an error that drew criticism from Rep. Nancy Mace and others.

Alec Schemmel, a Politics Reporter for Fox News Digital, provided coverage and analysis from the Washington D.C.-Baltimore area, detailing these developments in South Carolina’s Senate race.
