Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman experienced a frightening moment in the game against the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night. During the top of the eighth inning, Freeman was under a pop fly when he unexpectedly tumbled down the steps of the Royals’ dugout.
This incident happened as Freeman, in an attempt to catch the ball, lost awareness of his position relative to the foul territory. His fall raised immediate concern among players and trainers from both teams, who quickly came to his aid.
The crowd expressed relief with a standing ovation when Freeman managed to ascend back up the steps and return to the field. Despite the fall, Freeman assured reporters afterward, “I didn’t hit my head, so that was the key part there.” Although he reported soreness in his kneecaps, shoulder, hand, and wrist, he remained in good spirits.
Freeman explained his confusion during the play. “I went to lean, like I was going to lean against the rail to catch the ball — and obviously, there was no rail,” he detailed.
The Dodgers now face a critical four-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers, the top team in the National League. Manager Dave Roberts remarked, “I think that we really dodged a bullet. Very scary visually. For right now, he’s in good spirits, which I think is a good sign. Just kind of total body soreness.”
Following the game, the Dodgers improved their record to 73-48, widening their lead in the NL West over the San Diego Padres to 8.5 games.
